Our education policies aren’t just progressive, they're long-term.

The Liberal Democrats flagship education policy the pupil premium is making a positive difference, according to Ofsted’s most recent assessment of the impact it is having in schools.

The report states that “the pupil premium is boosting the education prospects of poorer children in a growing number of schools”. It also acknowledges that “school leaders are generally spending the pupil premium more effectively than at any time since the funding was introduced in 2011”, showing that improvements are being made across the board.

The extra funding of up to £2.5billion is helping around 2 million students from disadvantaged backgrounds who without this help would leaveschools withmuch worse qualifications. Schools are able to use the money as they think best meets the needs of pupils, including one-to-one support, help with literacy and numeracy or supporting catch-up lessons. As Ofsted says, the money is being spent better each year, and it’s making a real difference.

This policy, created and put into place by ordinary members of the Liberal Democrats, is having a huge impact on lives of children who previously might have been left to struggle. Following on from the recent decision announced by Liberal Democrats in Government to extend the premium to 3 and 4 year olds, our next focus is to extend the premium at the other end of the age spectrum, to create a Student Premium for 16-18 year olds.

Liberal Democrats don’t seek to make quick, unplanned, populist policies that might look good on a red-top headline. We wish to make real differences in people’s lives, which the Pupil Premium is now seen as doing.

We work with parents, teachers, unions and other people who care strongly about Education to do what we all get into education for – to help people use their talents, regardless of their background.
